BAD FRIENDS

Not really gonna toot my own horn on this, but give it a listen and come out to see us play! Theres talk 'round town of a tour coming up! The whole album (diy record will be released on vinyl on January 27th at Valentine's) is up for grabs on our bandcamp, any donation for the album is appreciated. Otherwise, check for dates on our facebook. Come watch me drink and yell about stuff. and BUY A RECORD WHEN ITS RELEASED.

NEUTRON RATS

Neutron Rats is probably my current favorite regional band. Fast, raw, gouge your eyes out with their spiky leather-bound dicks type of punk. I've got a copy of their Feral Dogs EP (Loud Punk Records)  in my collection at home and it pisses me off that there isn't more music on it (there's only four tracks). The artwork, by the way, was done by a good friend of mine, James Leshkevich, a phenomenal artist.  Dual-vocals spitting rage into your ears over heart-attack drums and blistering guitars always make for a good time. They play Albany pretty regularly, usually at Valentine's. In fact they've got a show coming up tomorrow! They're all great, approachable guys, despite their rather haggard and abrasive appearance. Check them out, buy a record, like them on facebook and attend their shows.

Rock Hill Bakehouse

I fucking love this place. There are a few good coffee places around Glens Falls but holy shit theyve got the best cup of coffee I've ever had. Their breakfast blend is worth a walk through a snowstorm. but thats just me.
Theres more to this place than the coffee. They're a bakehouse. Everything is so cheap for how good it is. I go there almost every week. Obviously they know their bread. TRY to find one you don't like.
Go in and just sit down at a table, a menu will be brought to you by a member of their incredibly lax, yet attentive staff. Personally I go for the Smith's Enlightened Offspring. An apple and cheddar sandwich with honey mustard on raisin bread. I'm a man of habit. I eat it every time I go.
Along with the quiet, comfortable atmosphere, they have a LIBRARY!
And they have open mic's every thursday! the only thing that's missing is booze.

DO:
  • Go there and try at least one of the specials. they almost always have at least one veggie or vegan soup on the menu.
  • Have a cup of coffee
  • Have a sandwich and a biscotti
  • Leave with a loaf.
  • Tip your server.
  • Like them on Facebook.
DONT:
  • Be an asshole and sit on your phone talking loudly about the new shitty sunglasses you just bought or how your mom is riding your ass about getting out of her basement the whole time you're there. Nobody wants to hear that bullshit. Especially me. I go there fairly often and I'm sick of you clowns.
  • Forget to prop the door back open after you're done releasing your waste. I hate looking like an asshole for knocking on a closed door with nobody behind it just because you're lazy.

Photos stolen from their facebook.

Raul's Mexican Grill

A  tiny restaurant located in the center of Glens Falls. Right on Glen street at the roundabout. The food is excellent for those of us who choose not to eat meat. they have plenty of options and almost everything on the menu is veggie-convertable.

Whats Great:

  • Almost all the items on the menu are Veggie-convertable. Some members of the staff happen to vegan, and they are always willing to offer excellent suggestions for those of us having a hard time deciding or finding out which foods are better served vegan-friendly.
  • MARGARITA NIGHT. A Glens Falls thursday must. Get there early because Raul's fills up quickly. the drinks are cheap (ever-changing margarita flavors and wonderful mexican beers). The folks that attend are friendly and fun. not much wrong with this shin-dig.
Whats Not:

  • Not Much! I just wish the place was bigger! I used to get my hair cut when i was five in that very same building and I thought it was small even then!
  • I also wish they were open on sundays. I realize they need a day off with such a small staff but come on man, I'm craving some goat cheese quesadillas.
Suggestions:

  • I like the Black Goat (tacos with goat cheese and black beans with all the dressin's) my favey. its gone in about five minutes, washed down with a Negra Modelo. Always.
  • The Jerked Mushroom tacos. a great alternative to it's meaty counterpart. delicious.
  • MARGARITAS. duh.
The rest of their menu is available on their facebook.
Go there.

An Introduction.

If you grew up anywhere near Glens Falls, New York, remaining in the area after high school seemed like your worst nightmare. As long as you weren't exactly the hiking, hunting, four-wheeling, "packin' a dipper, bod"type of person. I'll admit, as I grew older, hiking and nature walks became enjoyable for me and i appreciate them so much more. But it has always been hard for me to sit around, drink Coors light, watch TV, and kill animals for fun.
After spending a few years in Albany during a failed attempt at achieving a fine arts degree (why I even bothered is beyond me), my fiance and I made the decision to leave the shoebox apartment we shared  in order to save money for our future life together. We moved to the heart of illustrious Glens Falls, where we found a reasonably priced apartment (at least twice the size of our one in Albany), that is minutes from my job (any job for a person my age, especially without a college degree, is a good job at this point).
So now we have a comfortable living space, a decent income with which to save some money, but most of my friends from my high school days have moved away, and my fiance is from the Albany area. It took quite a while for us to meet a few friends and find things to do out and about in one of my greatest teenage fears. Welcome to Life In Glens Falls: Bored Upstate
This blog is meant to chronicle my discoveries of hope for the upstate area for people like me. these areas will include, but are not limited to:
Glens Falls and its neighboring towns
The Capital city, Albany
the occasional out of state adventure in Vermont or Massachusetts

The subject matter of these posts will include, but are not limited to:
Music- mostly punk rock, occasional jazz and solo acts, but who knows where ill end up after a night of drinking?
Food- I'm a vegetarian, and i have many vegan friends. so if you're looking for vegan/veg friendly food around here, hopefully I'll be able to help
Fun- sometimes you have to look a little harder than a simple drive down main street to find something to do around here. if you grew up anywhere near Lake George, you know everything up there is either way too expensive or simply geared towards yuppies.

Lets hope i actually stick to this and not get bored with it.
